Leeds Knights forward Edgars Vengis is looking forward to taking the next step in his international career after receiving his first call-up to the Great Britain senior squad for this week's Men’s European Cup of Nations.
The selection marks an exciting milestone for Vengis, who has previously represented Great Britain at under-18 and under-20 level, and now has the opportunity to experience senior international hockey for the first time.
Describing the moment he got the message, Vengis said: “It was just a rush of emotions when I first found out, and I was very excited to go.
“I got a message early in the morning, and I was still kind of tired and shocked, but I went to tell my parents straight away.”
For Vengis, the call-up represents the fulfilment of an ambition he has held since he was young.
“It's been a dream since I've been small to experience international hockey because it's completely different to club level, and I'm just so excited.”
Having already experienced international competition with the younger age groups, Vengis is aware that stepping into the senior setup will bring a different challenge.
“At club level, it's different because there are systems and everybody knows each other. But in international hockey, everybody just gets thrown in, so you've got to find that chemistry quickly. It's a lot harder.”
Despite the challenge of building relationships quickly, Vengis is looking forward to meeting the entire squad and learning from those around him.
“I'm not really looking forward to meeting anyone in particular, just the whole team. I'm excited to see them all and try to learn something from each player.”
“I know a few from the under-20s and under-18s, so it'll be good to see them.”
The recognition of his performances at club level has also provided an added confidence boost heading into the tournament.
“It gives me a lot of confidence, actually. I feel like I was already confident before, but now I can express myself even more.”
With his first senior international experience ahead of him, Vengis has clear aims for the week.
“Just to work hard and try to impress the coaches and the players, and get to know them more.
“I just want to learn how international hockey works. Obviously, I've been with the under-20s and under-18s, but senior hockey is a whole different level.”
Everyone at the Leeds Knights wishes Edgars the very best of luck with Great Britain at the European Cup of Nations.
